Introduction

The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India appointed Indian Environmental Society as an Implementing Agency for the Program namely “Capacity Building for Hands-on Participatory Learning under Environmental Education in School System (EESS) sub-component of Environmental Management Capacity Building Technical Assistance (EMCBTA) Project”. Under this programme, IES initiated (in the year 2002 – 2003) the programme entitled “Hands-on Environmental Learning Programme – Phase - 1” in 8 states of the country (Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttranchal, Jammu and Kashmir, and Orissa) on the pilot basis. 100 schools from each state were selected. Sixteen Teachers Training Workshops, of three days duration, on the GLOBE Program were organized in which 100 school teachers from each project school were trained and were certified as GLOBE Teachers.

After the success of this programme, it was extended, in 2003–2004 (Phase–2), to 8 additional states of the country namely Kerala, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and Tripura. 100 schools were selected from each state, from which 100 teachers were identified from each state. Sixteen Teachers’ Training Workshops were organized in these 8 states i. e. 2 Training Workshops per State.

All together 32 teachers training workshops were organized in which more than 1500 teachers were trained on the GLOBE Protocols.
